My journey to body acceptance - I’ve still got a long way to go
I remember looking in the mirror and wishing I could change.
I was 6 when I started swimming and it was then I became aware of how my body looked. I grew up with a larger build and as an Filipina, I was surrounded by the idea that beauty was based on how skinny you are.
It was a lot of years hating the way I looked, criticising my body in the mirror and letting myself be validated by others words, I realised it was hurting me. I wanted to change the way I viewed myself.
It was hard to start my body acceptance journey but I went back to the mirror, looked myself in the eye and said ‘I love you’.
